This is the proposal for the competition for the sustainability renovation of CAP Rio de Janeiro, located in the Barcelona neighborhood of La Prosperitat. The original building, designed by the architect Lluís Nadal, is a reinforced concrete body with a very rational façade composition, featuring large horizontal windows, and the crude finish of concrete in the precast façade panels.
While respecting the original aesthetic of the building, the proposal of the contest consists of an external thermal layer improving the energy performance. A dry, industrialized system with thermal insulation and air chamber is used, topped by an outer shell made from Aquaroc concrete-based board. Decorative metal profiles are used to represent the original modulation of the concrete joints on the exterior of the new outer shell.
Finally, the project suggests taking advantage of the roof of the entrance marquee in order to establish a new rest area, incorporating the views and greenery of the park into the building’s idiosyncrasy.
